To RBL or not to RBL...
I find myself wondering if I need to get any more Rescue Beauty Lounge polishes, since they will be 50% off later today.
Scrangie, on my thumbnail, is from RBL's blogger collection. It has a purple base with aqua/green blue duochrome, but I swear there's a hidden warmth to it, too. Perhaps tiny copper shimmer? It is truly unusual.
However, I'm not convinced that RBL has that many other unusual colors. Though you could argue that RBL just needs quality, not quantity, in their colors.
In the images above, the first picture is with flash and is slightly lighter than what you'd see in person. In the second picture, there is not only flash but intense light that lightens up the polishes. Under the Sky, on my thumbnail, looks phenominal in photos- see the December 14th post at tobywoo's blog- but boy do I dislike it. It has so much promise, so much potential! But the blue microglitter suspended in a dark blue base is just flat. No sparkle, no shine, no shimmer. I don't think it adds anything to the polish. Dead Calm, on my pointer, is a great dark medium blue crème; it's a dark blue, but not dark enough to be mistaken for black except in the darkest of lighting. Killa Red, on my middle finger, is a finnicky dark red crème that can look like a regular blood red depending on the lighting. Drifter, on my ring finger, was an even bigger pain to apply. While both blue polishes were opaque in one coat (though I did two), and Smitten, on my pinkie, took two coats, both reds needed a minimum of three coats. As you can see with Drifter, a fourth coat would have evened out the dark purple-y red crème even more. Smitten was opaque at two coats and is strangely a pink crème I really like. I am not usually a pink person, but I think this pink is just a smidge warmer than the usual cool-toned pinks I would consider wearing. That makes it a little more interesting, and therefore wearable, for me.
RBL bottles can be rather fragile. I'm not sure if this bottle was broken before I purchased it, or if it broke while being shipped or stored in my "office." I think it was probably the first scenario since the bottle also looks used. This makes a good argument to ordering from RBL, since they might replace a chipped or broken bottle, and they probably wouldn't ship you a used bottle either. I did not buy directly from RBL, so I am out of luck. Strangely, I like this pink enough to consider pouring it into another bottle. That wouldn't be so bad- I'd lose the cute (though broken) bottle but gain a better brush. Which brings me to my big complaint with RBL.
The RBL brushes on my polishes suck like the force of a thousand Hoovers vacuuming at once. As you can see above, the China Glaze, Misa and Butter London brushes also flare out into a bit of a triangle shape at the bottom like the RBL brushes do. The OPI also flares a bit, but not too much. The CND is pretty much straight up and down.
The reason I really love OPI's brush is because you can lay it down, apply a little bit of pressure, and then the brush will smooth over your nail evenly. There's enough stiffness in the brush that it doesn't go everywhere on your nail, and the bristles of the brush are even enough that you don't have to worry about a whole bunch of blobs down by your cuticle where the brush went rogue.
The only RBL polish I didn't have a big brush issue with was Scrangie, so maybe the brushes have improved. (All my other RBLs were purchased over a year ago.) Or I have better control while polishing my left hand, which is at least partially true. The brush is not going to stop me from ordering a few newer RBLs during the sale, but if the brushes are still fluffy, limp, bushy and more difficult to control like my other RBLs... count me out for the rest. I can deal with a lot from a polish, but a good quality brush is really a necessity for me. I don't have a lot of time to fiddle with my nails, so if I can enjoy painting them with a good quality brush, I'll gravitate to brands that give me that luxury.
And to leave you with a less "wahh wahh wahh" impression, here's a peek at my current set of skittles. The greens and pink (it looks almost coral, but I swear it's hot pink!) on my left hand are from Butter London. Yes, that Butter London. My next blog entry just may be titled, "Why Butter London doesn't suck as much as you may have heard."
