New Sally Hansens - Complete Salon Manicure Edition
Sally Hansen is replacing their old Salon line with the new Complete Salon Manicure line. Gone is the visually appealing square bottle and rubber handle. Now the bottles have a weird dumpy shape that resembles a halfheartedly cut gemstone. The handle is shiny with a rubber ring at the bottom, next to the bottle. If you have a latex allergy, you'll still have to use caution with these new Salon bottles.
This new line's schtick is that it's "all five steps of a salon manicure in one bottle." And apparently nine out of ten salon professionals preferred their formula to the leading salon brand! Would the leading salon brand be the one that puts out sheer colors in big jugs? I digress. The Complete Salon Manicure line claims it is a base coat, strengthener, growth treatment, color and top coat all rolled into one bottle. I would believe that it's a strengthener, because in my experience, having nail polish on my fingertips does prevent them from breaking and bending as much. I would also believe that it's a growth treatment for the same reasons- if your nails aren't breaking or getting damaged because you're wearing polish, they're going to be able to grow longer. But I'm betting that if you don't use base coat, at least one of these colors is going to stain your nails. I also noticed the colors become more glossy and the shimmer stood out more when I put top coat on. It's actually decently shiny without top coat, but top coat makes it pop more. And of course I believe that the polish is a color- isn't that the point of nail polish?
One thing that Sally Hansen has done is bring colors from the old Salon line back. Back again are Clear'd for Takeoff, So Much Fawn, Raisin the Bar, Pat on the Black, Navy Baby, Haute Chocolate, Back to the Fuchsia and Shrimply Divine. There's also a Gilty Pleasure (310) in the core line. I'm not sure if this Gilty Pleasure is the same Gilty Pleasure from summer 2008 (?) in the Salon line.
I decided to finally get both Navy Baby (650) and Pat on the Black (660), as well as Midnight in NY (670), Gray by Gray (350), Yellow Kitty (420), and Fairy Teal (450.)
Fairy Teal is like a subdued turquoise crème with a hint of gray. Gray by Gray is more of a blue gray, or a dark gray with blue in it, than a standard gray crème. Midnight in NY has tiny, colored shimmer that I assume is pink and aqua, but it kind of comes off as indeterminate shimmer. You know it has different colors, but the shimmer's so small you can't really recognize it. The base color is like a charcoal with a little bit of yellow in it. At two coats, it does look black, though not super pigmented black. Three coats would probably amp up the pigmentation. Pat on the Black is like a super dark raspberry crème with a touch of blackberry. Had I known it was this pretty on the nail, I would have bought it ages ago!
Navy Baby is a dark electric blue shimmer. You can tell it's dark, but you can also tell it's not black in the light. Yellow Kitty is a pastel yellow crème that looks more neutral on the nail than it does in the bottle. I used two coats on all colors except Navy Baby and Yellow Kitty. The former only needed one coat, while the latter needed three.
One thing I need to point out: the brushes on these polishes are terrible. Stevie Wonder could have cut them more evenly. There appears to be a corner just randomly snipped off of the bottom of most of the brushes, so it's very uneven.
Here are Gray by Gray and Fairy Teal. All these pictures were taken with flash, so they're slightly lighter in these photos than they are in real life.
Here are Pat on the Black (guess it could have used a third coat- it looks fine with two under normal light, I swear!) and Midnight in NY.
And here are Yellow Kitty and Navy Baby.
On the whole, I would encourage you to pick up a color in this line if you like it. But you might want to check the brush before you buy!
